Background and Problem

The kitchen and two-story family room share a wall with a large opening above the kitchen sink. On the family room side, a couch sits against the shared wall where people can relax, take a nap, and watch TV.

The problem was that light from the kitchen would shine through the large opening into the family room. This made it difficult to take a nap on the couch when the kitchen lights were on. The light coming through the opening could also create glare while watching TV.

The Solution

Our solution was to install a roller shade with a chain loop over the large opening.

The roller shade provides better light control and allows the lighting in the kitchen and family room to be managed separately. When needed, the shade can simply be pulled down to block the kitchen light from entering the family room.

After the Installation

The homeowner is happy with the result.

When someone is taking a nap in the family room, they no longer need to ask someone in the kitchen to turn off the lights. The roller shade can simply be pulled down to block the light coming through the opening.

The kitchen lights can also remain on while someone watches TV in the family room without glare from the kitchen lights.

When the shade is not needed, it can simply be rolled back up, keeping the large opening between the kitchen and family room available.
